Softball lineup card: DP, FLEX, EH and 10 fielders
What a softball lineup card needs that a baseball card often doesn't, and how to write each special spot.
A softball lineup card looks a lot like a baseball card, but several formats add spots a baseball card has no room for. If your card only has nine lines and a narrow position box, these are the situations where it falls short.
Spots a softball card has to handle
10 fielders (slowpitch and some youth rec)
Many slowpitch and younger divisions play four outfielders. Use LC and RC for left-center and right-center (some leagues write LCF/RCF or use a short fielder, SF). Your card needs at least 10 batting lines and a position grid with 10 positions per inning.
DP and FLEX (fastpitch)
In fastpitch formats that use them, the designated player (DP) bats but may not field, and the FLEX plays defense without batting. The usual way to write it: the DP goes in a batting spot like any hitter, and the FLEX is listed in the 10th line, below the batting order, with their position. Mark the DP spot with DP and the FLEX line with FLEX plus a position such as FLEX/1B.
Extra hitter (EH)
Some leagues allow one or more extra hitters who bat but don't field. Write them in the order with EH as their position. With an EH you'll have 10 or more batters for nine or ten fielders.
Continuous batting order
Rec softball often bats the full roster. Read the continuous batting order guide for how to lay out the card when 14 or more players bat.
Example: fastpitch lineup with DP/FLEX
| # | No. | Player | Pos. |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8 | Harper J. | CF |
| 2 | 21 | Sofia D. | SS |
| 3 | 5 | Quinn A. | DP |
| 4 | 12 | Nora V. | C |
| 5 | 17 | Imani C. | 3B |
| 6 | 2 | Ella F. | P |
| 7 | 10 | Rosa H. | LF |
| 8 | 14 | June M. | 2B |
| 9 | 19 | Tess K. | RF |
| 10 | 24 | Mae L. | FLEX / 1B |
Example names are made up. Line 10 is the FLEX, who fields but does not bat while the DP is in the order.
